“Starting a venture in the water sector was my dream. During my tenure at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, I worked for a project supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The project experience combined with my professional experience laid the foundation for Greenvironment and it is the beginning of our water saving journey. The government and the general public are demanding transparency in water quality and efficiency of sewage treatment plants (STP) and effluent treatment plants (ETP). One way to address the demand is through adoption of smarter technologies like IoT and real-time monitoring”, says Varun Sridharan, founder of Greenvironment.

India’s population is expected to grow by 1.39 billion with only 4% of the world’s fresh water resources. This means greater human capital, higher economic growth goals may demand more per capita water consumption.

Water related problems need to be addressed at different levels. For instance, using or adopting real-time monitoring and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies help in providing information on any water spillage, thefts and unnecessary consumptions, etc. Greenvironment is one of such smart technology companies for water and energy management for buildings and businesses. They provide real-time monitoring (RTM) & troubleshooting solutions through Internet of Things (IoT) based technologies.

IoT is used to collect and analyse real-time data related to water. This includes flow, leakage, quality, consumption and energy use. Team Greenvironment assures a 30 percent savings on water cost. In addition to that, water footprint can be reduced by 55 percent. Whereas, real-time monitoring identifies inefficiencies, quality issues and demand-supply gaps in water distribution. In addition to that, Greenvironment deploys artificial intelligence to detect water quality and usage patterns to ensure accurate customized corrective measures.

Team Greenvironment developed the interactive dashboard as well as a user-friendly mobile application. Mobile application will be handy for technicians and plant operators. They can easily monitor the plants using the application. Using the interactive dashboard, one can run data analysis and download reports. The analytical engine can detect issues and provide instant mobile and email alerts. The tools and technologies are well established so that they are protected from data breaches and malware attacks.

At present, Greenvironment has a presence in Qatar, South Africa and the USA. They are expanding their water saving technologies to other countries in the Middle East,  Africa and Europe.

Varun wishes for the installation of real-time environment systems like ‘Online Continuous Emission Monitoring System (OCEMS)’ should be mandated by law. Eco-friendly manufacturing, recycle-reuse practices and green energy generation should be incentivised to achieve climate goals in advance.

Greenvironment is one of the best examples of how smart technologies like real time monitoring and IoT are amplifying climate action and green recovery.
