Environmental sustainability sounds unsettling and it takes some regular steps in our routine to develop such atmosphere. Knowingly or unknowingly digital workspace became part of our life and they emerged much faster than what we imagined. However, the need of printers are continuing for document backups, communication exchange and packaging etc in workspace. We generally use fonts and styles i.e. typography for documentation which deals with paper printing and ink.
The growth of the printing equipment market is expected to reach $56.16 billion by 2025 at a CAGR of 6%. According to ezeep, CO2 emissions per printed page is 5 gram if an inkjet printer is used, and 6 gram if a laser printer is used. That means, printing is directly connected with paper, ink and energy consumed during the process.
There are few eco-friendly fonts like Ryman Eco, which was developed by Dan Rhatigan in partnership with Grey London are taken climate into consideration for printing. The main objective of the font is to save ink; and as they expected it got a positive response from environmental lovers and enthusiasts. The Ryman Eco font takes less character intensity, so therefore it consumes less ink for printing.
The Ryman Eco is betting on one letter at a time for sustainability. This font is available for free and easy to download and use it as other standard fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, and Verdana.
As per Ryman study, if everyone started using eco-friendly fonts for printing, then we can save millions of Ink Cartridges that can reduce CO2 emissions by over 8.5 Million Tons that is equivalent to 20 million gallons of oil produced every year.
Paphitis suggested making Ryman Font as the default print font for entrepreneurs and business entities. There are other similar fonts like Spranq, which is designed by the Dutch company and their plan is to give the better printing experience. The journey of climate friendly typography is just a beginning in the process of reconnecting people with nature when each letter counts for environment.
