Welcome to the Second Confluence Edition of Ecopreneur India magazine.
Across the 19 iconic stories that span this edition, you will see a common thread of experience: ecopreneurs are tapping into ancient wisdom for modern green solutions. We salute this indomitable community and their resilience in the face of all odds.
Over the past 12 months, reports of war, recession, heatwaves, cloudbursts, elections and unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have been taking over newsrooms. Intense news bulletins on natural catastrophes are further fueling climate anxiety.
At Ecopreneur India, we have adopted the time-tested approach of speaking of the root causes of problems and proposing feasible solutions for them. For this reason, our readers’ community have been showering us with love and continuously engaging with our stories.
In August 2022, we launched our first confluence edition of Ecopreneur India with 24 stories across India–who have made the courageous decision to be part of India’s Green Recovery. We committed to nurturing the ecopreneurship ecosystem by seeding and harvesting green innovations. The highest recognition came in the form of our registration. The Registrar of Newspaper of India approved our registration number TELENG/2022/84033 making Ecopreneur India a proud member of India’s media ecosystem.
In the first half of this year, India marked two historic feats. Firstly, India is the first country to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the Lunar Surface. It is a technological showdown by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to explore the less-known South Pole of the moon. After the successful landing of Vikram lander on the moon, the ISRO chief proudly announced, “India is on moon.” It is one such example of institutional building that caters to the needs of present and future generations.
India holds the presidency for the first time on the 18th G20, marking an important milestone in its global leadership role. With its diverse economy, technological prowess, and commitment to sustainable development with the theme of India’s G20 Presidency – “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth · One Family · One Future.”
For the year 2024, several countries are preparing for electoral exercise, including India. Political stands on climate change are hitting the headlines. For instance, in the US election campaign, republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called “Climate Change Agenda is a hoax.” The election heat is ON!
Despite recurrent floods and landslides, some of the proposed projects, such as ‘Holistic Development of Great Nicobar Island’, green bonds, etc. are putting India’s green reputation in jeopardy. In tandem, we are hearing of free sops and poll promises for votes. Finding strong political will and concurrent plans for climate action is hard.
Therefore, preparedness and disaster risk reduction are key to thriving in a new environment. Other than considering technology as the elixir for the climate crisis, the right combination of knowledge, wisdom, and innovative technologies will facilitate a comprehensive solution.
At Ecopreneur, our team has been interacting with hundreds of ecopreneurs and noticed hurdles in their journey. On the production side, there is a need for a more skilled workforce in cutting-edge technologies. Surprisingly, in sectors such as waste management, there is still a taboo to attract young minds. On the demand side, taxation brackets, red-tapism, and regulations are limiting green startups to participate in government tenders.
The rise of Indian ecopreneur is a win for the climate action movement. We all can play the role of catalyst and celebrate the stories of green innovations. India is strategically positioned to serve developing and developed communities with its unique and cost effective solutions.
