A Hot Summer Ahead: The Return of El Niño, Declining Biodiversity and Drying Rivers

Summer is already here. Many states in India are experiencing soaring temperatures in March 2023, well before the summer begins.

Studies suggest the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon in 2023. This means summer will be hottest along with heat waves and during the monsoon, there will be a deficit of rainfall. The experts say that it is too early for the monsoon predictions. Even so, this phenomenon will affect humans, animals, crops and the economy badly.

On 3rd March, as we celebrate World Wildlife Day (WWD), it is important to acknowledge the role played by the plants and animals to protect the environment and reduce human risk. The strong association between declining biodiversity and human health is proven. Yet, the required plan of action is delayed for biodiversity conservation. This year WWD is celebrated under the theme of “Partnerships for wildlife conservation.”

Across the globe, rivers are facing threat due to pollution, unsustainable infrastructure development and climate change. The 14th March of every year is celebrated as the International Day of Action for Rivers, marking the importance and need to protect rivers for the survival of humans.

The population of beloved sparrows in our cities across India has declined due to rapid urbanisation and microwave pollution. Every year, on 20th March, World Sparrow Day is celebrated to spread awareness on the importance of sparrows. Let us cherish and encourage them in our homes and communities.

As we observe World Sparrow Day, in this summer time, we can help them by keeping a bowl of water and some grains to feed on. By this way, we can do this and many other acts of compassion to save our sparrows, birds, and animals in the harsh summer season.

Every year, 21st March is observed as International Day of Forests and this year’s theme is “Forests and Health.” As we celebrate this day, news stories have caught our sight. First, a landmark study reports that “the world’s forests are losing their ability to absorb carbon due to increasingly ‘unstable’ conditions caused by humans.”

Next, is the huge forest fire in the east of Havana, Cuba blazing for seven days, causing damage to large areas of land, forest plantation and coffee areas. According to local authorities, Cuba has witnessed 80 forest fires in the month of January.

As early as 2025, half of the world’s population could be living in areas facing water scarcity. Scary, right!! This means “there is an urgent need to accelerate change to solve the water and sanitation crisis.” Thus, this year’s World Water Day and UN 2023 Water Conference will be pivotal to our water future as a global community.

At The Ecopreneur, as always, we are committed to spread the stories of green recovery solutions and catalyse actions for Earth our home!
