As per the data published by world sustainable development summit, 2022, “with increasing urbanization and water demand, the per capita water availability in the country has declined by almost 20% in the last two decades and is likely to decline by another 20% by 2050, making India a water-scarce country”. And another research titled, “An Investigation into Domestic Water Consumption and Water Use Habits in Indian Urban Areas”, 2015 reported that bathing has the highest water consumption and it is followed by water used in the water closet, dish washing, and clothes washing.
Water management is one of the critical areas to ensure sustainable development of the cities. A case study conducted by EarthFokus revealed interesting facts on water saving in a corporate campus which has 14000 employees. As per their assessment, through water savers, 250 million liters of water saved in a year.
“My neighbor asked me to design a water saving device for her kitchen. I took it as a project and understood the potential of such devices for water saving. Initially, I had no clue on how to design a product. However, I used to sketch the designs and try making others understand the product. We spent almost 6 months to come up with a prototype and worked 6 more months to come up with the product”. Arun, the founder of EarthFokus, recalled the initial days of the company’s journey.
EarthFokus manufactures water savers which are the simple attachments for taps through an effortless DIY manner. A normal tap will discharge close to 10 to 12 liters per minute. However, Earthfokus’s water saver discharges an output of 500 ml per minute and their second most efficient product gives close to 1 to 1.5 liters per minute. It means, they can save more than 90% of water from a regular faucet without compromising the hand wash experience of the user.
Additionally, water saving attachments can save power (energy) required to pump million liters of water every year. Thus maintenance cost of the pump will go down and durability will increase. Additional interesting impact would be reduction in frequency of water carrying vehicles that bring water into urban communities. If the water is conserved at the source apparently it will reduce the pressure on sewage treatment plants. Overall the water savers can cut down the overall carbon footprint of the respective buildings.
Ecofokus is using eco brass for manufacturing as it is durable and long-lasting. Moreover, no lead presence and best quality brass availability in India helped them to consider it as a suitable material for manufacturing. In a company’s point of view, ecobrass is malleable hence brings down the manufacturing cost.
As per the company’s assessment, initially people were hesitant to use mist form of hand wash. However, EarthFokus noticed the change in the user behavior in the course of time as they are offering the same washing experience for users and return on investment models for clients.
EarthFokus is using water savers as a tool for environmental conservation and catalyzing green recovery.
