Visual arts such as cinemas, photography and documentaries create a profound impact on thought process. And especially documentaries are becoming an effective medium to keeping us updated in contemporary topics.
Recently, I watched a documentary called “The Fight Against Ecocide” which is a 48 minute, thought provoking documentary by VPRO released in 2015.
“Why this is (environmental destruction) not a crime? What is this? How is it that we haven’t criminalized mass damage and destruction to the earth?” This is an intriguing question asked by the famous lawyer Polly Higgins who calls herself as “Earth’s Lawyer”. Personally, this was an eye-opener question for me to watch the documentary.
Ecocide documentary talks about the loophole in the existing environmental law which led to large scale environment destruction. This calls for an urgent need to create a law that could regulate mass environmental destruction and dictates environmental damage as a punishable offense. As per the inputs of documentary, the concept of ecocide is not a new one which was introduced back in 1972; and about to pass in 1996. However, it didn’t happen for reasons and such incidents were covered in this documentary.
This documentary is a journey of Polly Higgins, Baltasar Garzon and other notable personalities to make ecocide as an ‘ACT’; and it is interesting to watch this documentary to understand Ecocide.
