“My grandfather used to grow millets, ” said a 60 year old farmer.

“My village sarpanch told me that until he visited the farm he never knew what millets would look like at field level”, said another farmer.

These are shocking reactions from rural Telangana in India where millets were staple diet for for centuries in this region. 

Lingala Naresh, cofounder at Creamy Millet, who works closely with farmers observes this phenomenon as an impact of new age lifestyle.

He says “even though millets are highly nutritious, post green revolution they are missing from our kitchens due to lack of value addition technology accessibility. The manual dehulling of millets in earlier days posed a great challenge for food makers since it took high efforts and much more time than other grains. Apparently, instant foods and hyper processed foods flooded the market. Thus both visibility and usability of millets were sidelined in the kitchen despite growing an easier task”.  

With on-field experiences and necessities, Creamy Millet emerged as one of the promising startups in India which is taking millet innovation beyond borders. Creamy Millet is working intensively to innovate interesting flavors of millets. Creamy millet is a slowly churned gelato/ice cream which is lesser in calories, fat and rich micro nutrient profile.

Another cofounder, Lakshman kept his confidence on the public acceptance of Creamy Millet. He says “we did aggressive pallet testing with above 1 lakh people and improved compositions in accordance with global standards. I and Naresh preferred to participate directly in all outreach stalls where we got an opportunity to listen and witness reactions in live. At present, we can confidently say that no taste compromise in ice cream while palm jaggery, natural fruit pulp & millet milk compositions are perfectly blended.”

According to Creamy millet team, their ice cream is different with other ice creams in following ways:

Slow Churning: Creamy Millet is a slow churned and purest gelato without pumping any foam. 

Low Glycemic Index Sweetener: Palm jaggery is one the low glycemic index sweetener used for ice cream

Real fruit Pulp: Enhancing the real taste of the gelato with real fruit pulp from fresh fruits

Low calorie: Low fat and low calorie gelato is almost 5 times less than other ice creams. They openly claim that they are under ‘fssai’ ice cream classification since dairy is also part of their ice cream.

Millet Milk: Used scientific approach in milk extraction from optimal nutrition and taste values
